A simple, all-in-one courtyard wedding in San Juan Capistrano

A Franciscan Gardens Wedding
in San Juan Capistrano

Right in the middle of San Juan Capistrano, Franciscan Gardens is one of those venues that feels completely different once you step inside.

From the outside, it’s easy to miss.

Inside, it opens up into a private courtyard with string lights overhead and everything set in one place. It’s clean, quiet, and easy to work with.

Why Couples Choose Franciscan Gardens

The biggest advantage here is how simple the day feels.

Everything happens in one location:

  • getting ready

  • ceremony

  • cocktail hour

  • reception

No driving. No moving guests around. No gaps in the timeline.

It keeps things relaxed and allows the day to move naturally from one part to the next.

The courtyard is the entire experience.

During the day, the white walls reflect light evenly across the space. In the evening, the string lights take over and create a completely different feel.

It’s minimal, consistent, and photographs well without needing much adjustment.

Ceremony at Franciscan Gardens

Ceremonies are typically held right in the courtyard.

Guests are seated facing the main doors, with the space naturally framing everything.

It’s intimate without feeling small, and because everything stays in one place, there’s no break between the ceremony and the rest of the night.

Joey’s Take on a Wedding Day
at Franciscan Gardens

To give you a real idea of how the day usually flows, this is pretty close to what I end up doing for most weddings here.

Nothing forced, nothing overplanned — just what works.

  • Getting Ready: I’ll usually start with the bride about 1–2 hours before the ceremony at Franciscan Gardens, then spend a little time with the groom and groomsmen.

  • Before the Ceremony: Photos of the guys around the venue, and the girls in the parlor — keeping things separate so you don’t run into each other early.

  • Ceremony

  • Portraits: Family photos, wedding party, and then some time set aside for just the two of you.

  • Reception

  • Optional: If you’re up for it, we can step out for a few night shots on Camino Capistrano — always a solid way to end it.

Every wedding is a little different, but this is usually the flow.

Keeping it simple like this tends to make everything feel easier — and honestly, that’s when the best photos happen.

Q&A

What makes Franciscan Gardens a great wedding venue?
It’s tucked right in the middle of San Juan Capistrano, so you get that private garden feel but you’re still surrounded by all the character of downtown. It’s clean, simple, and really well laid out, which makes everything flow easily without feeling crowded.

When is the best time for photos at Franciscan Gardens?
Late afternoon into sunset is always great, but like most spots in San Juan, you’ve got a lot of flexibility. Earlier in the day can actually work really well too—the surrounding buildings and walls act like natural reflectors, especially in the alleyways and tighter areas, so you get really clean light that you don’t always get later in the day.

Where do you take photos around Franciscan Gardens?
The venue itself is great for ceremony and reception moments, but one of the best parts is being able to step right into downtown San Juan. You’ve got alleyways, textured walls, arches, and spots around the Mission that all photograph really well. Los Rios Street is also close by if you want something a little more natural and relaxed. Sometimes during the photo walk for the romantics, we’ll even stop by Swallows Inn for a quick shot—and if there’s a band playing, I’ve even had couples jump in for a “first” dance there.

How many speeches should we plan for?
I usually recommend keeping it to a few key people and keeping them short. A couple great speeches always land better than a long lineup, and it keeps the night moving so you actually get time on the dance floor.

Do we need permits for photos around San Juan Capistrano?
Most of downtown is pretty easy to work in, but if you want to shoot inside the Mission, you’ll need a permit. It’s always worth it if you want that iconic look, and I’ll help guide you on what makes the most sense based on your timeline.
