Calafia is one of the easier beaches in San Clemente to build a full session around because there are several different looks packed into one area.
Most sessions naturally move through:
- sandstone bluffs and crevices
- railroad tracks
- the beach trail on the north side
- and finishing closer to the shoreline or sand
The area works really well for:

- and families wanting a relaxed beach session without needing to bounce between locations
The location feels a little more textured and layered than some of the wider open beaches in town, which helps sessions feel natural without needing a huge amount of posing.
THE DIFFERENT LOOKS AROUND CALAFIA
One reason Calafia photographs so well is how many different backgrounds fit into one area.
The sandstone bluffs and natural crevices bring in warmer tones and softer texture that work really well throughout different times of day.
The railroad tracks add more of the classic coastal San Clemente feel, especially with softer morning or evening light.
The beach trail on the north side gives another completely different look with seasonal flowers, beach grass, coastal plants, and lifeguard tower views back toward the ocean.
Most sessions usually finish closer to the shoreline once the light softens near the water.

Calafia can work well at different times of day depending on the conditions and which part of the beach we are using.
Sunset is always popular, but it is definitely not the only option here.
Morning light can work really well near the bluffs, tracks, and trails when the beach is quieter and the coastline still has some direction to the light.
The sandstone areas also help break up brighter light earlier in the day compared to beaches that are completely open.
I usually check:

- crowds
- wind
- and beach conditions
before sessions so we can plan around what the beach actually looks like that day instead of just guessing.
FAMILY AND SENIOR SESSIONS
Family sessions here usually stay pretty relaxed because there are several good spots close together without needing to cover a huge distance.

Some senior sessions also include a few relaxed family photos while everyone is already together. It is an easy way to update family photos without planning a completely separate session later.

Better for larger families, multiple groupings, seniors wanting more variety, or sessions including family photos.
